LOVE stories have become sweeter, literally. Not too long ago, brand manager Alena Azman accepted a marriage proposal from her future husband Raphael Couzet, with the wind in her hair by the majestic waterfront of the Sydney Opera House in Australia. On the day of their wedding, it was only apt for the couple to re-enact the scene, albeit with the help of icing sugar.

“Our wedding cake topper has a figurine of me and my husband with the Sydney Opera House in the background — it’s basically a depiction of the marriage proposal, with us dressed in the clothes that we had on that day,” says brand manager Alena, 31. “It was just a unique way of sharing our ‘story’ with the guests, since we didn’t have a photo slide show planned.”

Today’s newlyweds are beginning to leave their guests with something – other than the frills and spills of the bridal gown – to talk about. From macaroon towers and sweet stacks of icing sugar, customised wedding cakes have evolved to incorporate the most important element of them all: intricately-detailed toppers spun from distinctive tales of romance.

“Traditional bride-and-groom toppers look dated. They’re also too generic,” says cake designer Chan Hui Min, 43, who helms homemade confections portal, Mama Min (mamamin.wordpress.com).

Indeed, some of the more modern topper requests that she’s handled were anything but conventional. “One that comes to mind was an inspiration that came from the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon . The couple was into wushu but I had to think of a way to ensure that the figurines wouldn’t be fighting with each other. The end result was a bride and groom working together to face their ‘opponent’.”

Another had her moulding a bride in smooch stance, while the sculpted groom played drummer boy atop a sea of blue and silver decadence. According to Chan: “The groom loves playing the drums and the bride’s figurine was made with her wedding dress in mind.”

The trend, it seems, is to “show off your mini-me”. “I’ve made replicas of a flight attendant and her civil engineer husband, and another couple jetting off in a biplane – the groom was in the biplane business,” says Chan, who started her baking business in 2006.

To Nigel Skelchy, chief communications officer of homegrown boutique baker Just Heavenly (justheavenly.biz), customised toppers “tell a story”. “It tells the bride and groom’s family and guests who they are,” he says. “One of my favourites is a half-naked, apron-clad milkmaid and milkman standing atop a wedge of cake shaped like Gouda cheese. The couple really loves dairy products, hence the design.
