New England Summer Nationals fits in well in Worcester over the July 4 weekend

The 21st New England Summer Nationals went off like clockwork at both Green Hill Park and on Main Street in downtown Worcester over the July 4th weekend from Friday night through Sunday evening. The Summer Nationals was and is still the brain child of Bob Moscoffian, Sr., of Oxford. It started off over two decades ago as a humble cruise event for classics, hot rods and muscle cars and just grew and grew from that little event in the park off Rt. 9. In later years, expansion resulted in Worcester city officials shutting down streets for the burnouts and drag racing.

Thousands of collector cars were packed into Green Hill Park by Saturday afternoon where motor head spectators paid 12 bucks to check out all the iron. A $30 combination ticket though also gave the fans access to the downtown drag events. During the daytime hours on Friday and Saturday, bikers drag raced just outside the underpass in downtown Worcester. Around 7 p.m., the car drag crowd headed for downtown Worcester for their chance to perform burnouts and/or match drag racing events. There’s always been a mystique about fast cars racing at night and flames shooting from exhaust pipes. The noise, flames, rubber burning and smell of fuel exhaust seems to be the big turn on.

Restricted parking, only for participants, campers, vendors and City of Worcester public safety were the only ones permitted to drive vehicles in Green Hill Park. The rest of us had to park outside and were shuttle bussed into the main entrance of the event. During the day, picturesque Green Hill Park turned into a sea of street rods, muscle cars, stocks and modifieds, trucks, vans, eurosports and low riders as far as the eye could see. We estimated that there were thousands of collector cars on the hillsides. At the time we got there, we eyeballed about 35 females clad in scanty bikinis and high heels sauntering along for the beauty contest which was among the numerous other live entertainment, manufacturers exhibits, body piercing, swap meet, tattoos, and hydraulics. Vendors were also in plentiful supply selling everything from food, T-shirts, clothing, home improvement and lots of other goods and services.

Many attendees came in on Friday night and staked out their RV’s, camp trailers, tent trailers and tents. Others lined the park roads, on Saturday afternoon with folding chairs and pop-up shelters, shielding the hot sun, eyeballing all of the pricey restored and even new cars that were traveling in and out of the park.
