Man arrested after hit-and-run incident; accused of using racial slurs at children

A Chambersburg father said his daughter's birthday party Sunday was interrupted by a man who screamed racial slurs at children before running him over in a pickup truck adorned with a full-size Confederate battle flag.

"I'm disappointed," Robert Lesher, 30, said. "My family has lived here a very long time. I couldn't imagine any of this being tolerated here."

Meanwhile, the driver called the incident a "freak accident." He maintains that he was surrounded and attacked by a group of people after Lesher approached his truck and began "running his mouth." He also completely denied flying a Confederate flag from the truck.

"I'm a country boy. I grew up on a farm," Tylor Thomas said. "I was raised not to go around that kind of crap. I panicked and I ran."

Thomas, 19, of 1077 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, was arrested in connection with the incident. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving injury and failing to stop and provide aid or report to police.

He was arraigned early Monday before Magisterial District Judge Todd Williams and later released from Franklin County Jail on $20,000 bail.

Chambersburg Police were dispatched about 5:30 p.m. Sunday to a pedestrian accident outside Lesher's home, 302 S. Hackberry Drive. When they arrived, Lesher was bleeding from his head, according to a police affidavit.

He was taken to Chambersburg Hospital, then flown to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey. An epileptic, Lesher had a seizure after the truck hit him and suffered a large gash on the back of his head. He was treated and released the next morning.

"Nothing was broken and I'm alive, thank God," he said. "I didn't think I was coming out from under that truck."

Lesher said his family and friends were gathered on their front lawn for his daughter's fourth birthday party. He grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, and about 25 neighborhood children had come over. Many of them wore party hats and played with noise makers.

"It was princess stuff for the girls and Spongebob stuff for the boys," he said.

Lesher and his wife are white. The people attending their party included black and Hispanic children and adults.

He and other witnesses told police that around the time the children were having cupcakes, a two-tone brown Ford F-250 turned onto the street and one of the two white men inside began yelling a racial slur at the children gathered on his lawn.
