Western Kansas is not considered by many to be a hotbed for music, but a local band is trying to change that.

One group, 3X7 -- pronounced three-ex-seven -- is a rock band with members stretching from Gorham to WaKeeney. Formed in August 2001, they describe themselves as an aluminum rock band.

"The definition of aluminum rock is hard but malleable," said lead vocalist James Dean Hobbs. "We can play light. We can play heavy and everything in between."

On Saturady, 3X7 opened for Default at the Wild West Festival, playing an assortment of original and cover songs.

The band has been making music and getting its name out the hard way, tirelessly practicing, writing music and networking.

"It is growing," said guitar player Kenny Zahn. "It has definitely evolved into something that is easier to put ourselves out there and get a response from people. The music gets better the more we write it, and more people like it, the more they want to hear it."

Hobbs said it is all about perseverance.

"You have to have the whole business mindset to it, because you have to be able to market yourself and call people," Hobbs said. "It can be a full-time job if you want to do it consistently. That is where bands start to falter."

The band is composed of four members -- Hobbs, lead vocalist and guitar; Zahn, guitar and vocals; Johnny Lapka, percussion and vocals; and Aaron Pratt, bass and vocals.

The group has been in existence for nearly 10 years, but members have changed through time. Hobbs, who was 17 when the band formed, now is the only remaining founding member.

However, Hobbs said he has heard people say the band is better now than it was before.

"That could be because we are getting into it more, growing into more or maybe because of new members," Hobbs said. "There have been changes, and hopefully they have been for the better."

The group has recorded two studio albums -- Changing the Odds in 2005 and The Thinker Album in 2008.

The band is capable of playing five hours of original music and more than six hours of cover song material.

"We play everything from the 1960s to now," Hobbs said. "You can hear a lot of different genres and decades in it. From all the songs we cover, you can kind of feel a little piece of everything."

3X7 first started playing at local bars in Hays and western Kansas, but since, the band has played in venues from California to Alabama.
