Newington Vs. Southington State Baseball Championship | SportsGrid

It’s quite a time for premature celebrations in sports. Last week brought us the Great Penalty Kick Reversal of Fortune , while today we bring you a high school baseball almost-finish in Connecticut that will haunt the almost-winners for a long time.
The scene: Newington High. Southington High. Extra innings. Class LL title on the line. With Southington’s Matt Spruill on first, teammate Sal Romano lined a double to left. Spruill came all the way around the bases, and Southington celebrated accordingly. The problem with that: Spruill never touched home plate. Newington catcher Tyler Barrett appealed – and Spruill got called out. Two innings later, Newington won it, rendering the celebration you can see here moot:
That is just terrible. (For Southington, anyway.) The controversy didn’t end with the game, however: while Southington coach Charles Lembo said he didn’t see Spruill’s fateful plate-non-crossing, one photographer snapped some shots of the moment , and let’s just say not everyone is so sure Spruill missed home.
Either way, a crushing loss for the Southington squad, an amazing win for Newington, and a coach’s dream. Imagine trying to instill the importance of fundamentals in your kids with this Southington baseball team have no right being all over the home plate i am glad newington baseball team won you did the right thing it was a miracle about the coach’s wife and Southington baseball runner i was on a little league a long time ago i touch the bases and home plate and the team did not cover the home plate you got caught Southington win or lose but your baseball team should not cover the home plate. So they can make the call. @Randomjunk: The catcher does not have time to see the play, as he is watching for a throw to home. He doesn’t have to see the play to ask for an appeal. The umpire is watching to see that the runner touches the plate. The coach and the bench players saw that the runner missed the plate and made a legal appeal. The umpire saw the misstep and made the correct call. Too bad for Southington, however, that’s baseball! The only question I have in all of this would be whether or not all 6 infielders had left fair territory prior to the appeal being made. It looks fairly certain that the runner missed the plate and the umpire made the correct call, however, according to the official high school rules, the appeal must be made before all infielders have left fair territory. Anyone have proof that they did, or did not?
