Children Learn to Draw Dragon, Castles, Knights and Royalty at the Library

A special art workshop for children ages 7 and up, How to Draw Medieval Stuff: Dragons, Castles, Knights and Royalty, will be presented at the Indian Trails Public Library, 355 S. Schoenbeck Rd, Wheeling, on Friday, June 24, at 11 a.m. Tickets are required for the event and will be distributed on a first-come, first served basis 30 minutes before the program. A special art workshop for children ages 7 and up, How to Draw Medieval Stuff: Dragons, Castles, Knights and Royalty, highlights the theme of the Indian Trails Public Library Summer Reading Program, A Midsummer Knight’s Read. The art workshop, held on Friday, June 24, at 11 a.m., is designed to give young artists practical drawing tips and greater inspiration to explore new subject areas and artistic media.

The workshop, taught by Christine Thornton, owner of Christine Thornton’s Art Studio in Mount Prospect and part-time art teacher at Anne Sullivan School in Prospect Heights, will present an exciting, hands-on art experience using extensive visual tools, lively discussion, and lots of drawing time.

The Library’s Summer Reading Program, A Midsummer Knight’s Read, began on Saturday, June 11, and will continue through the summer until August 6. The main goal of the program is to encourage children, teens, and adults to read during the vacation months. This is done through programs that bring children to the library, and reading contests which award prizes and surprises to children of all ages who complete reading requirements. Other children’s programs throughout the summer will continue to explore this Medieval theme through storytimes, games, and other artistic media.

The Summer Reading Program for high schoolers and adults features prizes, and contest drawings for readers who complete pre-set reading levels.

A Medieval Faire, scheduled for Saturday, August 6, will conclude the Summer Reading Program with a festival involving food, face painting, a balloon sculptor, and a demonstration by the Chicago Swordplay Guild.

How to Draw Medieval Stuff: Dragons, Castles, Knights will be held at the Indian Trails Public Library on Friday, June 24, at 11 a.m. Tickets are required for the event and will be distributed on a first-come, first served basis 30 minutes before the program. I am the author of this book so obviously I am going to be biased that this is simply the BEST dragon drawing book on the market…but putting that aside, here is some useful information about this book.

1. It is 150 black and white pages, but it does include a 16 page colour insert of full page illustrations.

3. I drew the entire book in pencil. Unlike drawing books that claim “all you need is a paper and pencil” but then the artwork is all done in computer programs like Adobe Photoshop, this book is truly drawn all in pencil! Not that I have anything against digital medium mind you, but if you want to learn how to draw and SHADE dragons using more traditional- and less expensive- mediums, than “photo shopped” artwork isn’t going to teach you what you need to know. So this book is all done in graphite pencil. The colour insert is also done using coloured pencil.

4. The style I draw in could be called “fantastic realism” in that, unlike many other fantasy/dragon drawing books out there, my artwork is not all cartoony or comic bookish. I try to draw most of my dragons realistic looking.

5. I get many emails from people asking me how to shade, and I find shading is one important aspect of drawing that most fantasy/dragon drawing books lack! So for each drawing tutorial I have included steps on how to shade each dragon.

6. This entire book is all about drawing dragons. There is no big filler section in the back covering all kinds of unrelated creatures or characters, or full page spreads filled with loosely drawn sketches with zero detail. I do have some great sections on drawing all different types of scales, ridges, horns, and more, so if you do pick up the book I hope you enjoy it!
