Stockholm – where everything happens
Stephen Calleja was in Stockholm for five days, visiting various parts of this growing city, rich in history and culture but also modern and trendy. The mixture gives Stockholm an advantage over other cities as it brings together the old and the new in a glorious blend that is hard to surpass
Kungstradgarden
Kungstradgarden, the Garden of the King in Sweden, is a massive park in the centre of the city. Unusually for parks, part of it is more like a waterfront similar to the one at Valletta or Vittoriosa, although the yachts in Stockholm are smaller than the ones we see here. Yet the promenade itself is much wider and serves as a gathering place for many Swedes, as does the rest of the park, the greener part so to speak.
It is a popular hang-out for many Swedes, young and old, and the venue for several cultural activities. When we were there, on the first day, it was raining quite heavily and yet we could still see a sizeable crowd following a concert on one of the open stages that surround the park. I cant imagine anything of the sort taking place in Malta, afraid as we are of a drop of rain.
In winter, we were told that the park also offers a skating rink, and I guess the younger ones would be absorbed by such an opportunity.
The park is divided into four parts, and there are several landmarks worth noting, among them fountains and monuments. Bridges link it to other sections of the city, and one of them leads to a beautiful island that overlooks the main city section with all its old and modern buildings.
A walk in this park is one of the most pleasant experiences. There is no smell of fuel, only the natural smells of trees and flowers. Even the promenade, where the boats are berthed, is free of the obnoxious smells that sometimes characterise our sea-fronts. As I explained in my article yesterday, the fact that it rains frequently certainly helps in washing away all the dirt and grime that accumulates, and with them the bad smells of many other cities that I visited.
City Hall
Taking a look at the Stockholm City Hall one gets the impression that it was built several centuries ago. But it is less than 100 years old, as it was opened in 1923 after 12 years of construction work. We were all wondering how our mayors would feel if they had to run the city from such a magnificent place. Most of them are already big-headed enough; let alone if they had to administer a city from such a splendid building.

ERINGER: AFTONBLADET (SWEDEN): ALBERT, KING OF SCANDALS
Robert Eringer was a London-based foreign correspondent for The Toronto Star and The Blade (Toledo, Ohio); as an investigative reporter for British newspapers, his specialty was infiltrating extremist groups. Eringer evolved from journalism to private intelligence before embarking on a ten-year mission for FBI Counterintelligence. In addition to Ruse, a nonfiction book about his undercover missions for the FBI, Eringer has authored a cluster of absurdist novels combining intrigue and lunacy. He also authored Surreal Bounce, a six-year odyssey in search of creativity and madness; and penned a weekly column--The Investigator--for the Santa Barbara News-Press. Eringer was spymaster to Prince Albert II of Monaco and created the principality's first intelligence service. It was killed by persons who feared what Eringer had uncovered.
