Barbies

Only a handful of '90s outfits have survived until today. Some defunct ones were memorable while some deserved to fall sideways. Some have moved on to other fields, while some have stuck it out and diversified their paths within the music industry.

For Barbies, one of the most remembered bands from the alternative era, it's never felt like there's been any closure. The sense of longing might have stemmed from the fact that lead vocalist Paopol "Tar" Thephasdin Na Ayuthaya is still around as a well-known actor and radio deejay in his own right. His lanky, bad-boy appearance with wry sense of humour has never gone out of style, making the babyface 37-year-old still very much an object of affection of women across generations.

Lo and behold! Barbies are all set to come back and, from the look of things, with a big bang. With different members from the original line up, Barbies are returning with fresh, new sound and under a new home called smallroom. The first single, Korn Wan Sood Tai (Before the Last Day), signifies progression and vitality through their blend of electronic, rock, industrial and maturity as well as youthful edge. I fell hard for the track within the first two minutes.

The single was released to the media last Wednesday, and it has already gone viral all over social networks. Old fans are now high-fiving one another while new fans are scrambling to get a hold of back catalogues. All on a strength of one song and a very good looking lead singer.

Go, Barbies, go!

Trasher's "World of Music" night

There are a lot of clubnights in Bangkok these days. From indie rock, techno, electro to dubstep, there are many varieties, and their degrees of success also vary. Out of all the relatively young party promoters, I have a lot of love for Trasher whose music policy veers towards pop music, top 40 hits or guilty pleasures: Something you can easily sing and dance along to.
