'Senior' Prom huge success

The prom annually held at Bent County HealthCare Center was nearly cancelled this year due to a glitch in the entertainment. The annual prom event is anxiously anticipated by the elders all year especially for the dance. A last minute cancellation nearly derailed the whole event this year. However, thanks to two local musicians, Fred Darnell and Brian Stoker, who agreed at the last minute to perform for the group, the night was saved! Elders in the nursing home, neighbors from assisted living, and clients from adult day services all got dressed up in formal attire, enjoyed a fancy dinner and were whisked away to the dance. Family members, staff, and youth volunteers made the night special for those who wanted to cut a rug on the dance floor. Even a few folks in wheelchairs took a spin to the music.

Thank you to all who made this memorable event happen. Las Animas and Wiley high schools donated their prom decorations. Fred Darnell and Brian Stoker contributed their musical talent. Youth volunteers including Andrew Burkett, Alisse Hall, Marisa Vazquez, Tino Dorado, Chelsea Lewis, and Baylee Bezona helped decorate, fix hair, do make-up, and dance with the elders. Staff worked hard to coordinate it all and make sure all went well. It was a huge success, and we look forward to next year’s event.

Vacation Canceled: Senate Will Return Tuesday | Red Dog Report

One day after President Obama chided Congress for its lackadaisical work schedule, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that the Senate is canceling its July 4 recess.

“The Senate will reconvene on Tuesday the day after the fourth,” Reid said on the Senate floor today, CBS Capitol Hill Producer John Nolen reports.  “We’ll do that because we have work to do.
