Lloyd Helmreich, 97, captures nearly a century's worth of memories growing up ...

Herald-Whig Staff Writer

Lloyd Helmreich, a 97-year-old rural Quincy resident, got one of the biggest thrills of his life two months ago when his first book rolled off the presses.

The self-published volume, "Hard Times, Happy Memories," offers highlights from Helmreich's life growing up in Adams County.

Helmreich spent three years writing the book and told family members he was afraid he wouldn't live long enough to see the finished product. But that fear dissolved when a box arrived from the publisher.

"Finally they got it printed, and I was plumb tickled," Helmreich said in an interview.

Helmreich's son, Bruce Helmreich of Quincy, said the book was an outgrowth of a class project several years ago by his oldest daughter, Elissa, who was instructed to interview somebody. She chose her grandfather.

"She taped a little bit of an interview with him," Bruce Helmreich recalled. "This kind of got things going. So we suggested that he start writing things down. So he wrote this longhanded on yellow legal pads, and then we typed it into the computer and edited it. Then we formed our own publishing company and self-published it."

The result was a 204-page softcover book full of memories, pictures and drawings intended to help shed light on what life was like for Helmreich while he was growing up and as he started living on his own.

"The reason I decided to write the book is, I'm getting pretty old, and there's not many people who will know the things that happened in my life. And when I'm gone, there won't be anyone to ask," Helmreich said. "So I wanted to leave a record of some of the interesting things that happened, and my hope is that the future generations can enjoy thinking about the past."

The book contains glimpses into Helmreich's family life. He was born in 1914, one of three sons of Peter and Ida Helmreich, who operated a farm about five miles northeast of Liberty.

He tells about going to school in the tiny North Rock schoolhouse a mile across the farm fields from his home. He had to cross a creek while going to or from the school.

"If it rained very much and that creek got out, I couldn't cross it. So my folks would have to come two miles around in a buggy to pick me up," he said.

Helmreich wrote about the difficulty of trying to make a living on a farm before, during and after the Great Depression.

He worked on the family farm during his early years.
