Salton Sea study bumps up earthquake liklihood

SALTON SEA – Seismologists say the ground beneath California’s largest lake is riddled with earthquake faults.

It is 227 feet below sea level and is one of the lowest points on Earth. It is bordered by the San Andreas Fault which is the dividing line between the Pacific and North American plates.

A study by the Scripps Institute of Oceanography has revealed an assortment of smaller faults associated with Southern Branch of the San Andreas which is most likely to trigger California’s ‘big one’.

There are many implications, but Cal Tech seismologist Tom Heaton advises against jumping to conclusions.

“Our first order of business is to try to understand how the process works in the first place. The more we understand about the process, the less predictable it looks.”

Scripps scientists say the Salton Sea area is overdue by 100 years for a quake that could be as big as M7.5.
