Kids from the city experience life on a Broward ranch
For a few weeks this summer, the city kids are trading in their sneakers for cowboy boots.
In the petting zoo, young campers dance with seven goats. A few feet away Kyra Ferbeyre, 15, and Jia Garcia, 9, wash down Chance, a white and brown spotted paint horse.
At the Smiling Goat Summer Camp in Southwest Ranches, kids from the city get a little taste of nature, said camp co-director Ray Garcia.
“Ninety percent of the time these kids are in the air conditioning,’’ Garcia said. “We want to get them outside.”
Garcia and his wife, Vivian Alvarez-Garcia, started the camp on their ranch, the Rancho Paloma Bonilla. After hosting a visit from their daughters’ school, Saint Rose of Lima in Miami Shores, in February, the couple decided to turn what started as a one-day ranch tour into a two-week summer camp.
“I wanted to target the kids from my neighborhood in Miami who don’t get this experience,” Alvarez-Garcia said. “I’ve had the ranch for seven years but just launched the camp this year through word of mouth.”
At 8:45 every morning, the couple bus children from the Miami Shores Community Center directly to the ranch.
There, the kids learn horseback riding, archery, fishing, art and gardening, yoga and a variety of outdoor sports.
“Archery is a lot of fun. I’ve never done it before,” said Kyle Ferbeyre, 10, who attends Pinecrest Elementary in South Miami-Dade. “But most of the time, the arrow just bounces off.”
With five horses on site, all of the campers get a chance to saddle up. A sign above the petting zoo reminds the children that “everyone rides!”
“This is my first time being on a horse,” said 6-year-old Angelina Cambo. “It’s very fun. I’m never really scared because when we get scared the horse gets scared and it jumps up.”
While the camp focuses on teaching campers horsemanship, the Garcias also lead hikes and fishing trips.
“One time, I caught a huge tilapia,” said 12-year-old Anthony Cambo, a student at Saint Rose of Lima.
In partnership with A Cup of Green, a group that provides information about healthy eating and sustainable living, campers learn how to grow their own plants. Using empty milk cartons as their miniature greenhouses, the kids grow “edible gardens full of sprouts, parsley and a bunch of different herbs,” Alvarez-Garcia said.
