Strawberry Fields Forever

My daughter knows Lady Gaga's lyrics by heart, but on Father's Day it was time to introduce her to the Beatles, and what better way than with John Lennon's "Strawberry Fields Forever" on CD and a trip to Erie's strawberry fields? (The New York City locale will come another day.) We headed out to Lake City (Route 5, west of Fairview) to pick berries at Mason Farms.

I remembered bottled water but forgot sunscreen, so we had to make a detour along the way. The directions from the Mason Farms stand, which now accepts debit cards, is to head west until you see cars pulled over on the side of the road. You'll pull up behind them and pay $1.25 for an empty basket that holds 4 quarts of berries (the minimum). You can return with one of their baskets at a later time, or bring one from last year if you are a saver. We chose two baskets ($2.50) and figured we would pick 8 quarts total ($2 per quart; $16 total). A flat (8 quarts) of prepicked berries sells for for $19.99 at Mason Farms stands, while quarts sell for $3.49.

We were done quite quickly. The berries were a beautiful bright red and bountiful. We popped a few on the way home -- they were a nice balance between sweet and tart. The abundant rain had not watered down their flavor.

Once home, I had no shortage of recipes. I just had to get the berries cleaned and sorted for the recipes before the strawberry goblin gobbled them all up.

First up is a strawberry jam. This is a quick jam, with no added pectin. Don't flinch at the herbs -- you can do thyme or rosemary -- or the pepper in the recipe. The flavor is still overwhelmingly pure strawberry with just a slight hint of something else. It is delish on toast, but try pairing it with a soft cheese, such as a Brie, atop cracked black pepper crackers or an herbed baguette.

With the Fourth of July approaching, the Red, White and Blueberry Trifle Cake is easy to make in advance and sure to be a showstopper either at your home or to take. To get the full impact, a clear trifle dish is paramount for serving. If you don't have one, don't halve the cakes. Brush both cake tops with the almond sugar, dollop the whipped cream frosting in the middle layer with berries, top with second cake layer and frost entire cake with whipped cream. Decorate with berries. For added presentation, shave some white chocolate on top.

Yeast waffles are easy to make. Just prepare the batter the night before. Make your waffles in the morning and top with berries and whipped cream. This breakfast, served with a glass of orange juice and/or a cup of coffee, will make your house guests feel like they are at a four-star B&B, only with better company. And if you are the parent of a daughter with a fondness for sleepovers, you'll be the mom to beat for breakfast.

Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles From the album 'Magical Mystery Tour' There are two other versions of this in the archives, but none are in the right key. I thought a great song such as this deserved a proper tab in the archives. Because the recording of this song involved a lot of playing around with tape speeds, you need to tune down your guitar by a whole step. So instead of tuning your bottom string to E, tune to D, then tune the other strings to this by playing at the 5th/4th fret (you know the routine ...) You should end up tuned to DGCFAD. This means that the song is based on the C chord for the guitar, but it ends up being in the key of Bb. I've tried to give a guitar part that does justice to all the things that are going on in the song. For the first bit it's fairly straight forward since the song has a guitar playing here - but later on I've tried to tab out a guitar version of what the cellos and trumpets are doing.
