Remember: Safety always comes first

Now that’s not something a lot of us tend to think about before heading out to sea, or even a leisurely outing on the lake or stream. But it’s something you should think about first. And speaking of “first,” one of the first things you should consider, especially when heading any distance out to sea, is a first-aid kit (that enough firsts for you in one sentence?).

I won’t pretend to know everything you should include in a first-aid kit. Some folks might want to go as far as including an operating table and a nurse, while others might include only a band-aid and a shot of whiskey (for medicinal purposes only, of course). I do suggest that you have band-aids, maybe some medical tape, aspirins (or something like) and something to clean out a wound, like peroxide. It’s up to you, but some folks even include a sterilized razor to aid in removing errant fish hooks (yes, that has happened to me).

But, enough of that. During our last outing we talked about getting stuff like fishing reels, hooks, lures and tackle boxes in order before your big outing. This week I’d like to touch on what I think is even more important – servicing the boat and especially the trailer you will be hauling it on. After all, if your trailer prematurely launches your boat while traveling 65 miles per hour down the highway, your fishing equipment won’t do you much good, at least not that day.

So first (yet another first), check the trailer bearing. Replace or grease bearings as needed. Check axles. Look for any corroded parts and replace those that are suspect. Better safe than sorry. And while you’ve got the wheels off checking the bearings, inspect the tires for wear. Look for cracks between the treads. If need be, purchase new tires.

Oh, and you know those ropes, straps or chains that hold your boat to the trailer? Better check them for wear or corrosion, too. I once saw a nice ski boat fly like a kite, if only momentarily, before crashing and smashing to smitherines in the median of U.S. Highway 49 just north of Johnson State Park. I know that was costly to the insurance company and owner, probably quite embarrassing, too. But thank goodness there were no apparent human casualties.

Of course, the boat won’t be of much use when you get to the lake or ocean if the motors (gas and trolling) don’t work (unless you intend to paddle in the "first" place). So, well before heading out, be sure the gas engine cranks and is in good working order. Charge batteries thoroughly, and check wiring for abrasions or loose connections. If equipped with ship-to-shore radio and/or GPS, check ‘em out, too. Make sure enough Coast Guard approved life vests are in the boat.

What Creates A Reliable First Aid Kit? | Holiday Homes Europe™

To get started with, a first aid bag is just not normally a hand bag these days. The words first aid bag have significantly given way to a “first aid kit,” since first aid items are more likely to be carried in tough, water resistant cloth bags or perhaps heavy duty vinyl cases than in an actual hand bag. However the term still sees some informal usage among emergency medical professionals and army field medics whose trauma response devices and supplies in many cases are carried in duffle bag or rucksack-shaped boxes. For such kits a trauma bag is the widespread word among makers and emergency health-related associations.

Regardless of whether its name is a kit or a bag, containers are generally meant to be water resistant, tough, and to open completely. Pouches typically unzip in order to lay spread out flat on the ground and provide complete access to all of the kit’s contents. Plastic cases typically have a flip-top top that open to exposes equipment and supplies for simple selection in the heat of a nerve-wracking moment.

Exact duffle-style professional first aid bags typically have 2 to 3 huge side pockets to help with finding the right equipment. Also, the contents inside the primary pocket are often sub-packaged by category in plastic bags or scaled-down transparent pockets. As an example, a duffle-style first aid bag may contain a plastic wound dressing bag, an oral medicine bag, a rehydration bag, and so on.

Even though first aid kits can be bought in cases and pouches, water-proof textile pouches are the most typical for home, travel, and car kits. Plastic hard-shelled boxes and metal first aid cabinets are generally seen in workplace environments.

Looking for the right first aid bag or kit will likely be based on the location in which it’s going to be placed and kept ready for use at. For some shoppers, a kit will be for their home, car, or traveling. The items in these kits differ somewhat. Typically home and travel kits have equipment and supplies suited to treating minor injuries and ailments. Car kits contain additional first aid kit contents for stabilizing serious injuries such broken bones and lacerations. However, home disaster preparedness kits and first aid travel bags specialized for visiting remote locations are also stocked for treating serious injuries.

Regardless of the terms, first aid bags or kits are only effective if obtained ahead of an unexpected emergency. The best-stocked kit in the world is of small use if it’s still sitting on a store shelf when an accident or emergency situation strikes.
