Former Steps star Claire Richards on finding her voice again
Since Steps broke up in 2001, Claire Richards has become better known for her yo-yo dieting than her stunning voice.
But by joining reality show Popstar to Operastar, the 33-year-old has reminded both the public and herself, that she can sing. Claire, who was part of Steps for four years as the group notched up 14 number one singles, explains: “I’ve sung once in 10 years since I left Steps and I’d completely lost my confidence.
“I thought I’d lost the ability, so this seemed like the right thing for me.
“I’ve turned down Dancing on Ice, I’m A Celebrity, Australian Fat Camp, Celebrity Biggest Loser, everything. None of them appealed.
“I still needed some convincing to do this but it’s been amazing.”
Yet it hasn’t been easy for the mum-of-two, who admits: “It’s been such a long time since I’ve performed, I’ve struggled.
“With all my confidence issues, especially about my weight, it’s been like therapy and I’m really noticing a change.
“People have been so supportive, too. I was worried they would go ‘Who?’“
Claire has widely documented her battle with the bulge over the past six years.
“As a kid, I obviously didn’t dream about being famous for being a yo-yo dieter,” she says. “I wanted to be a singer, and Popstar to Operastar has given me that back.
“I don’t have anyone telling me I have to be a size 10 to succeed like I did in Steps, and luckily opera stars are generally older and larger. It could be a whole new career!”
On anorexia - or coming close to it
Claire has had an unhealthy relationship with food since joining Steps. She was offered a place in the group on the condition she lost weight and she starved herself to maintain a size 8-10 figure.
But when the band broke up, Claire gorged herself. In an average day, she would have a McDonald’s breakfast, sausage rolls and two cakes or a three-course meal for lunch, and a double portion for dinner. She’d snack on chocolate and drink a litre of coke a day.
In four years, her weight doubled from 8st to 16st.
And when she was pregnant with her first child Charlie, now four, her eating became even more out of control. She ate the same huge portions until she started to suffer from constant heartburn and her joints ached so much she struggled to get out of bed.
