News briefs: Lawyers want Bonds conviction changed

SAN FRANCISCO -- Barry Bonds' attorneys filed a motion Wednesday asking a judge to change Bonds' obstruction of justice conviction to an acquittal or schedule a new trial.

Bonds was convicted of obstructing a grand jury's steroids investigation by giving an evasive answer during questioning in 2003. The trial ended in April with a mistrial on three perjury counts along with the conviction on the single obstruction count.

Bonds' lawyers argue he was unfairly convicted of "unauthorized rambling" in discussing being a celebrity child when asked whether his trainer ever injected him with a syringe. The lawyers insist that Bonds answered the question directly during further questioning.

"Unauthorized rambling is not a federal crime," Bonds' lawyers write in their brief. They ask U.S. District Judge Susan Illston to schedule a hearing for July 1 on their request.

Illston has already scheduled a hearing for June 24 to set a sentencing date for the conviction and she may combine the two dates into one court session.

Bonds is not expected to receive a prison sentence, based on similar convictions and sentencing of two other figures charged with lying about steroids. Full Story

Cubs activate Soriano, put Barney on DL

Alfonso Soriano is back with the Cubs and the team has placed Darwin Barney on the DL with sprained left knee and activated Soriano, the team announced.

Soriano was on the disabled list with a left quad strain. He went 1 for 13 in three games with Triple-A Iowa.

Soriano was at Wrigley Field and headed to take batting practice. Soriano was placed on the DL on May 31, but at the time said he didn't think he'd need the full time to get healthy. Playing the last three nights makes it clear he was right.

Soriano was hitting .271/.297/.525 with 12 home runs when he went on the DL.

Rockies might extend Fowler's Triple-A stay

Dexter Fowler's Triple-A rehab stint could turn into a demotion, Jim Armstrong of the Denver Post writes.

The Rockies have told Fowler he may be staying in Triple-A when his rehab assignment is done later this week to work on his swing.

"We told Dexter that there was the possibility that once the 72-hour rehab is up there are no guaranteed that you'll go from rehab right to recall," Rockies manager Jim Tracy told Armstrong. "He's aware of that. There are some things that obviously all of us have had a lot of discussions about … There are some things that obviously have to be ironed out.
