Jerry Davich: Teaching job earns low grade

Bryana, the cutest first grader I’ve ever met, set the tone early for my day as a part-time teacher at Winfield Elementary School.

During a “Boggle” spelling assignment using an overhead projector, I tried to assist her by pointing out a word she missed on the screen.

“Please don’t help me,” she whispered to me in the sweetest voice. “I want to learn it myself.”

Oh. Yes. Right. Of course. Oops. Sorry.

And so began my first lesson after arriving at the school bright and early (for me) at 8:30 a.m. surrounded by a swarm of 21 eager ankle biters, ages 6 through 9. First, though, was the Pledge of Allegiance, in unison with hands over hearts.

The students’ teacher, Janet Miller, was kind enough to invite me into her classroom on a recent Friday before the school year ended to see, first-hand, what teachers everywhere have to deal with on a daily basis. My initial reaction: Yikes.

Although the kids were smart, polite and generally well-behaved, it was like herding drunken cats into a dog kennel. Yes, the kids were cute, sweet and kitten-like cats, but drunken cats nonetheless. To help me remember the cats’, uh, I mean the kids’, names, Miller gave me a pile of popsicle sticks with each child’s name written on it.

I also brought in a giant fly swatter as a prop to keep the kids’ attention and possibly to keep their respect. I offered to later give it to the student who showed the best attitude.

“Don’t call me dude!” one boy angrily told another during an assignment. “Only my brother calls me dude!”

OK, I thought, maybe I’ll have to keep the giant fly swatter for myself.

The class started with a spelling test, and the kids were ready with pencils in hand and folders strategically placed upright on their desks to avoid cheating from other students.

“The next word is shore, like I walked the shore at the beach,” I told them while noticing some kids struggling to spell basic words as others whipped through them.

The test’s “challenge words” were Iowa and Kansas, but sometimes with first graders any seemingly simple word can be a challenge. For example, one girl once asked her teacher about the word “hour.” But the query sounded like this, “Miss Miller, what’s a whore?
