GUHSD student receives West-MEC honor
Washington High School recent graduate, Elizabeth Garcia, was awarded the West-MEC Career and Technical Education (CTE) Student of the Month award for the month of May.
Beginning her sophomore year, and throughout her high school experience, Garcia, 18, immersed herself in the Glendale Union High School District CTE Business program. GUHSD CTE programs are enhanced through a partnership with West-MEC.
Garcia enrolled in business courses such as accounting and advanced accounting. She also assumed several leadership roles in Washington High School's Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) chapter.
"In CTE classes, you are not doing the same old routine. You are actually doing the things that apply to real life. What you learn in CTE is going to apply to your future career. You get the chance to enhance your resume and learn responsibility," Garcia said.
Through a CTE Cooperative Education internship, Garcia interned at the law offices of Gillespie, Shields and Durant, where she developed self-confidence, working knowledge and a bona fide interest in practicing law.
"The attorney who mentored me allowed me to do several hands-on projects. I liked that I was involved in their daily business. I learned terms that are used every day. It helped me figure out that I want a career in law and psychology," Garcia said.
Business teacher and FBLA advisor Rebecca McGinnis nominated Garcia for the award. McGinnis applauded Garcia's academic drive and leadership dedication, but said Garcia's strength of character is most impressive, calling Garcia an "amazing young lady."
"My 9-year-old brother drives me to succeed. My dad and I basically raised him and I know he looks up to me. I want to be successful for him," Garcia said.
Garcia is a recipient of the Arizona Board of Regents AIMS scholarship. She will be attending a state university in the fall studying psychology and hopes to continue at another institution to pursue a law degree.
The West-MEC CTE Student of the Month Program encourages CTE teachers to nominate a student who stands out in their CTE course. CTE programs prepare students to embark on a career in a variety of industries. Nominations submitted by CTE teachers consider a student's academics, attitude, class attendance, leadership, and respect toward peers and teachers.
Local Valley businesses, including Phoenix International Raceway, The Orcutt Winslow Partnership and the Sundt Companies, donated funds to support the West-MEC CTE Student of the Month. Monthly winners receive an award plaque and a $50 gift card to Best Buy.
