No more fat cats
Charlie is fat. He eats what he shouldn't, doesn't get much exercise and whenever he does lose weight, can't seem to keep it off.
The only difference between Charlie and many overweight people you may know is that he is a cat.
Obesity in animals is a huge problem among the pet population. Dogs and cats alike eat too much and pack on the pounds, which can have serious health effects.
The problem affects everyone, not just neglectful pet owners. In fact, Charlie is a clinic cat at the Oakridge Animal Centre, but he still has a weight problem because he's crafty. When he knows nobody is looking, Charlie will steal food from the cages of animals in for surgery or boarding and when he can't get that, he opens up the bags of food that are on sale to get his fix.
"Every time we put him on a diet he steals food," said Veterinary Technician Nicole Brown.
Currently, Charlie is taking part in a weight loss program that the clinic offers, trying to get his hefty 16.2 lb. frame down to a svelte 13. He is one of many cats and dogs that are patients at the clinic following the program.
Using computer software called "Slim Fit," Brown and other veterinary technicians at the clinic assess an animal's body when they come in for a physical. They are then ranked on a scale of one to five, which ranges from emaciated to obese.
"Some of the dogs we see could be a six or a seven even," Brown said.
After they are assessed, the owners learn about the slimming program and are given the option of signing up. If they do, their animal will go on prescription dog food, be given a meal plan and owners are encouraged to increase their pet's activity.
It's like a "Biggest Loser" program for pets.
While there is a high level of compliance among pet owners, sometimes an element of denial can come into play.
"They'll say he's extra fuzzy, or that he's carrying an extra couple of pounds, 'but so am I,'" Brown said.
However the response has been very positive and many animals have signed up. Over the past six years, upwards of 60 animals, dogs and cats of different breeds, have used this method to get their weight back to a healthy level.
"It affects their life so much," Brown said.
