Eugenia girl hits gold on her first attempt

A 12-year-old Eugenia native hit gold Saturday and it was her first attempt.

Taylor Minifie is the winner of the $100 gold nugget at this year's Eugenia Gold Rush Days panning for gold event. She uncovered the nugget, about the size of a molar, during her first try at Saturday's festival.

This year organizers paid out the money rather than give a gold wafer as they have done in past years. This is the first time there's been more than one prize. A total of $200 was given out this year for a $100 nugget and two $50 nuggets.

"No idea what I'm going to do with the money," said Minifie who expects it will get spent on a family trip to visit relatives in Saskatchewan later this month.

Minifie and her sister and pare nt s moved to Eugenia last summer. Her father, who is retired from the Canadian military, plans to open a bed and breakfast in Eugenia.

The annual one-day event commemorates a gold rush that lasted only three weeks and involved 200 men who came to Eugenia Falls in 1853 seeking their fortune digging for gold.

According to a history of Eugenia sold at the Gold Rush Days event, gold fever was sparked by a nearby resident from Markdale and a friend who climbed down the rocky wall to explore the gorge at the foot of the falls. They noticed what looked like gold imbedded in the rocks. They tried to keep it a secret as they worked day after day extracting the glittering material from the rock. But soon others visiting the falls noticed the men at work and the rush for gold was on.

However it was short lived after samples sent to Toronto for analysis revealed that the sparkling ore in the rock at the bottom of the falls was iron pyrite known as fool's gold.

Julian Puzio of Oakville was the winner of the fishing derby held each year as part of the event. He caught a 3.6 pound largemouth bass in Eugenia Lake which won him a $50 prize.

"It was a fighter. We almost lost him. It was jumping all over the place," Puzio said.

It was Amber Robertson of Waterloo's first time at the Gold Rush Days festival. She was visiting with her partner, a magician who was performing in Thornbury at Canada Day festivities.

"I like the decorations making it look like the old gold rush days. There's a lot of stuff here for kids," Robertson said.

Among the events at this year's festival were tours of the Hydro One Power station at Eugenia, a kid's magic show, as well as a Conestoga wagon pull along with a contest for the best dressed period costume.

We have several times been in the same boat. most rooms are indeed for 2 people. it is possible to find quads, but it takes a lot of searching. you need to check websites, email hotels etc. we were able to find quads for our entire trip, and it saves a lot of money over 2 rooms. i would not squeeze 4 in a triple- there is likely a double bed and a twin bed only, and you would have to sneak the 4th child in, which i do not recommend.
