Fourth of July weekend usually means a few things: a day off from work, barbecuing, the outdoors and, of course, fireworks. All over New Jersey and New York, communities are planning events to celebrate our independence. Music, food and fireworks are the staples, but in a few places you will be able to do much more: there will be a circus in Maplewood, for instance, and battleship tours in Camden. Here is a guide to holiday celebrations scheduled to take place throughout the upcoming week.

MAPLEWOOD

Clowns, jugglers and circus animals highlight Maplewood's Fourth of July celebration, Monday.

The Zerbini Family Circus has shows at 1, 3:30 and 6 p.m. at Memorial Park. Between 4 p.m. and the 9 p.m. start of the fireworks, bands will play on the lawn in front of town hall, and food and drinks will be available.

The rain date for the event is Tuesday, but the circus will be held rain or shine on Monday.

Enter for the fireworks at the Civic House on Dunnell Road and the Field House on Oakview Avenue. Tickets, priced at $20, can be purchased at the gates. Seating is on the grass, with folding chairs permitted in certain areas.

LONG BRANCH

Celebrate the Fourth of July down the shore at Long Branch's Oceanfest.

Stroll the boardwalk enjoying food vendors, dancers, musicians, clowns and carnival acts, or take in a sculpture demonstration on the sand. There's a 3-on-3 basketball tournament for sports enthusiasts and a craft fair for shoppers. For the kids there are pirate- and safari-themed shows throughout the day, and for the adults live bands such as Swing Sabroso.

Monday's event, combining culture and community, has been going on since 1990. The action starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 10 p.m. The fireworks start at 9 p.m. The festival will go on rain or shine. Admission to the festival is free. If you decide to lounge in the sand, beach admission is $5 for adults and free for children younger than 17.

NEW YORK/HOBOKEN

Take in the Macy's 35th annual fireworks from either side of the Hudson River.

The fireworks -- featuring 40,000 pyrotechnic shells during a 25-minute synchronized display -- will be set to a musical score when they are set off from six barges positioned on the Hudson River. The largest fireworks display in the nation starts at 9 p.m. and will be broadcast in an hour-long special on NBC-TV, featuring performances by Beyoncé and Brad Paisley.

Residents all across New Jersey are getting ready to celebrate the Fourth of July, and they have plenty of options to choose from during the holiday weekend.

Dozens of events — from parades to festivals and, of course, fireworks — are planned throughout Essex County.

Holiday activities will be held Monday starting at 10 a.m. at the high school, Hanes pool and Memorial Park Oval. The 17th Annual Car Show will run at the high school from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The pool will host a patriotic ceremony and Kiwanis Swim Karnival. Rides and other attractions will begin at the oval at 11 a.m., with local bands performing from 2:30 to 7:45 p.m. Fireworks will begin at dusk. Call (973) 992-5000.
